2 Corinthians was written by St. Paul to the Corinthian church at a time of mission drift. It was a call to reconnect with the true gospel, an appeal to reengage with the gospel promised in the Old Testament and brought to fruition through Jesus. Paul hoped to reconcile the Corinthians with authentic Christianity and lead them away from secular replicas which lacked substance.
The letter serves as an example of how small differences in approach or practice can undermine our faith. Paul calls us back to appreciate a pure and simple faith—a faith that has been written into the hearts of those who believe and is unveiled by the work of the Spirit.
Paul’s reasoning and his writing are compelling, as are his lessons. If we wish to avoid mission drift, we would be wise to pay attention to his 2 Corinthians account.
