A Coal From The Altar, To Kindle The Holy Fire of Zeale is a powerful Puritan sermon written by Samuel Ward, aimed at rekindling spiritual fervor and religious commitment among believers. Ward, a prominent 17th-century English clergyman, emphasizes the importance of zeal—an intense passion for God and His service—as an essential quality for every Christian. The work is part of the broader Puritan movement’s focus on sincere, devout faith, countering the perceived lukewarm attitudes of the time.Ward’s sermon addresses the growing spiritual apathy he observed within the Church and society. He argues that true zeal is not just emotional fervor but a deep, disciplined devotion to living out Christian principles, both in personal piety and in service to others. Through biblical references and practical applications, Ward encourages readers to stoke the “holy fire” of zeal in their hearts, becoming active participants in the spiritual battle against sin and worldliness. He warns against extremes—either cold indifference or misguided fanaticism—and calls for a balanced, fervent faith that reflects both love for God and neighbor.
