A Humanist in the Age of Psychopaths is a political satire set in post-Brexit Britain. It charts the rise of an all-party group of humanist MPs in response to a global epidemic.
The academic Nesrine Al Biah discovers Neuro-Linguistic Dysfunction (NLD) after witnessing several cases of physical and psychological breakdown in her students.
She later identifies that its symptoms (sometimes likened to zombi-ism) can be triggered by the presentation of evidence and facts in everyday conversation.
Before her work is better known, MP Karel Glik uses NLD in a speech to Parliament. Relying heavily on evidentiary material and placing it in context, his intervention causes severe distress to numerous politicians on both sides of the House.
Effective government grinds to a halt.
Very quickly it is realised that NLD is running rampant – especially in the English speaking world – and it becomes better known internationally as the Confusion .
Focus then turns to the formation of the Humanist Alliance by Poppy Arnold and Flic Ziwa, believing that rationality has given them some protection, and their subsequent efforts to deal with the crisis.
They are not helped by the parallel rise of the anti-rationalist movement Thinking and Freedom founded by Connor Twining which has concluded that NLD doesn't exist.
And if it does exist, it's not real.
