"So much more than an engaging memoir of New York, this is a heart laid bare . . . [Goodman] turns yearning and remembrance into art." —Susan Vreeland, New York Times –bestselling author
For thirty-five years, writer Richard Goodman experienced love, loss, work, and friendship against the backdrop of a vibrant, one-of-a-kind setting: New York City. This memoir—made up of fourteen stories—is an emotional chronicle of a life lived on crowded streets, in small and quirky apartments, and among creative souls with stories to tell and lessons to impart. Even Goodman's sojourns away from the city—to the south of France, to a small Maine island—are influenced by what New York has taught him to endure and appreciate.
From becoming part of a writer's group in Soho to befriending a charming West Village octogenarian, from a failed marriage to the ruins of 9/11, Goodman delves deep into himself to uncover the thoughts and feelings that bind him to a city of endless possibility and indomitable spirit.
"In peerless prose, Goodman's A New York Memoir conveys you to a writers' enclave in Soho (where you lose your soul to love), the kitchen of a French chef, your friend Anne's apartment in Greenwich Village—even excursions to Maine and Provence, France. You'll never be the same again now that you've seen and heard and felt and thought with Richard." —Sena Jeter Naslund, New York Times –bestselling author of Ahab's Wife
"Richard Goodman's A New York Memoir takes over where E. B. White left off. It is a beautiful and powerful love story. It's a wonderful book." —Patty Dann, author of Mermaids and The Wright Sister
