This compelling novel is a human-interest story inspired by true events. Donald is a "normal boy" starting his life on a farm near Weyburn, Saskatchewan, during the Dirty Thirties. The tragic loss of his father changes the course of his life when his mother, Anna, decides to marry the hired hand, Frank. Frank hates children and gives Anna an ultimatum. He will marry her and help save her farm if she agrees to get rid of her children. This ultimatum leads Anna to take Donald (age 9) to an asylum where he is abandoned for many years. He struggles with the horrors and trauma of abandonment, loneliness and abuse while living in the mental institution. He questions God and learns many lessons about life as he shares his journey with us. It is a coming of age story of love, courage and forgiveness.
