In the post-war Philippines, a family's struggle for survival unfolds in the coastal towns, where shrimp paste, or bagoong, serves as both a staple and a symbol of resilience. This poignant tale follows Maria, the middle child among eleven siblings, who is tasked with a simple yet vital mission: to buy shrimp paste for their family's meager meals. As she races to the store, the phrase 'shrimp paste, shrimp paste' echoes in her mind, a mantra meant to ensure she doesn't forget her mission. However, fate has other plans; a sudden fall disrupts her focus, and as she approaches the Chinese merchant's store, the name eludes her. In a moment of innocent desperation and creativity, Maria resorts to a playful gesture that inadvertently reveals the item she needs. 'Ah, shrimp paste!' the merchant exclaims, showcasing the humor and humanity that dwell even in hardship. 'A Taste of Survival' captures the vibrant spirit of a struggling family, threading together themes of memory, childhood innocence, and the profound impact of cultural staples in everyday life, all set against the backdrop of a changing Philippines.
