First published in 1871, "A Treatise on Horse-Shoeing and Lameness" is a detailed guide to horse shoeing originally designed for novice farriers. It has chapters on everything from the history of farriery to speciality shoeing techniques, and it will appeal to modern readers looking for an introduction to the subject. Contents include: "The Foot, and Shoeing", "Historical Observations", "The Foot-Its Form and Function", "Preparing the Foot", "On Making Horse-shoes", "On Clips, Calkins, and Toe Pieces", "On fitting Horse-shoes", "Nails, Nailing, and Finishing", "Shoeing Horses for the Field and the Turf", "On Plating Race-horses", etc. Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in a modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially commissioned new introduction on maintaining and caring for horses.
