Coles A Very Capable Life: The Autobiography of Zarah Petri at Bayshore Shopping Centre in Ottawa, ON

Zarah Petri’s life story is extraordinary in its humour, grit, and hard-won wisdom. Born in the Hungarian village of Becse in the early twentieth century, Zarah is shaped by war, upheaval, and the wrenching separation of family as immigration pulls her parents to Canada. When she later follows them across the Atlantic, Zarah builds a life through determination, sharp intelligence, and a fearless independence that refuses to bend to convention. Told in a vivid voice carefully preserved by her son, John Leigh Walters, this memoir traces a working-class immigrant woman’s journey through the Prohibition years, the Great Depression, and the pressures of wartime survival—while revealing the intimate textures of everyday life, community, and belonging. By turns poignant and darkly comic, A Very Capable Life is both an unforgettable personal narrative and a rich document of Hungarian-Canadian history.
