Né à Lyon en 1912, Henri Grouès, qui deviendra plus tard l'abbé Pierre, choisit de devenir moine capucin à 19 ans. Résistant dans le Vercors pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il fonde l'auberge Emmaüs pour venir en aide aux traumatisés, aux pauvres et aux exclus. Il combat toute sa vie contre l'indifférence générale face à la misère.
