We never know how well any of us are prepared to make life and death decisions, but that is exactly what Margaret and David faced in 2003. After their third son, Christian, was born, it was immediately apparent that there was something wrong. When he was diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, David and Margaret were given three choices: take him home and allow him to be with his family as he passed away, see if he could become a candidate to receive a heart transplant, or have Christian undergo a series of surgeries that would effectively replumb his circulatory system. This is the story of that decision and many others made during Christian’s first year of life as told through Margaret’s personal journal and David’s regular updates to friends and family.
