Eleven years ago, a fourteen-year-old boy buried something in North Omaha and went away for it.
Now he's home.
Amari Ellis comes back to the Spencer Projects with a bus pass, a monitor on his ankle counting down three hundred sixty-four days, and a grandmother who is about to lose the only address he has ever had. The city has condemned the projects. Building by building, the place that raised him is coming down, and the ground underneath it is headed to auction.
Buried under all of it is a box that was never his. It belongs to Gary Grey - G-Dub - a man who has never once had to raise his voice, who has never forgotten anything, and who has spent eleven years waiting to learn who took what was his.
Amari doesn't want a crown. He wants a door that locks, a name that isn't a case number, and a woman who looks at him like he's already somebody. Arriyelle gives him the last one. Her ten-year-old son, Malik, gives him a reason to want the first two.
But the clock on his leg is running. The block is being sold out from under the people who built it. And the man coming for him already knows his name.
AMARI: Homecoming is a coming-of-age street saga set in the real North Omaha - Thirtieth Street, Lake Street, the courtyards of the Spencer Homes, the bus that comes when it comes. Told in the language it actually gets spoken in, it's a story about what a man will do to stay free, what a neighborhood is worth once somebody finally puts a price on it, and how much of yourself you can hand over before there's nothing left to come home to.
Some homecomings cost more than the leaving.
Book One of the Amari series. For readers of Sister Souljah, Ashley & JaQuavis, and K'wan.
