Through his commentaries on the Creed and the Articles, Forbes expounds a systematic theology for Evangelical Catholics. This dogmatic theology holds to the Evangelical conviction that the inspired Word of God contains all things necessary for salvation, and the Catholic conviction that God is guiding the whole Church into all truth... Forbes turns to the Vincentian canon to determine what beliefs are essential to the Catholic Christian faith. Considering the faith and practice of the original Christians, as this faith and worship spread among Christians around the world and across the ages, demands careful study of the Bible and Church history... As Pusey's protégé, Forbes shared his spiritual father's desire to contribute to the "evolution of a more accurate theology" and "development of the dogmatic element in the Church's teaching."
