"An Orphan of the Light" by Frank Scozzari is a gritty, mystery-driven novel set in Los Angeles. The story explores the dark side of Hollywood dreams and the haunting legacy of the 1932 real-life tragedy of Peg Entwistle, a young aspiring actress who famously leaped to her death from the Hollywood Sign.
Set in 2003, the story follows Detective Garrett Connelly of the LAPD, who becomes deeply obsessed with the mysterious death of an aspiring young actress named Nora Sims, whose body is found beneath the Hollywood sign in 1979. Was it suicide or murder? His investigation leads him to befriend Moira, a waitress at a local cafe who bears a striking resemblance to the deceased Nora. Moira, an aspiring young actress herself, has her own has her own demons. She is haunted by a family secret.
As the two unravel the past, hidden truths are brought to the surface. Also, a romance between the two develops. The investigation eventually sets Moira on an ill-fated path of revenge.
At its core, the book delves into the heartbreaking and complex realities of the Hollywood film industry, focusing on what happens when fame and glamour elude those who chase it.
