When the Palestinian militant organization Hamas launched brutal attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, it sent shock waves across the world. In the aftermath, Israel launched a counterattack on the Gaza Strip, home of Hamas as well as millions of Palestinians. As a result of these attacks, tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians have been injured or killed. Both events have resulted in strong emotional responses and impassioned calls for action from politicians, aid organizations, and civilians on a global scale, but the same strong emotions have also become visible through a rise in antisemitism, which is prejudice and hostility toward Jewish people, and Islamophobia, which is prejudice and hostility toward Muslims. This volume examines recent patterns of antisemitism and Islamophobia in the U.S. and abroad, how they relate to the history of religion-based prejudice, and possible solutions to curb prejudice and hate.
