Set in 17th-century Italy, the play tells the dramatic and tragic story of the ancient Greek myth of Ariadne, who is abandoned by Theseus on the island of Naxos. In Lee’s version, the myth is re-imagined within a Renaissance context, focusing on the psychological and emotional complexities of Ariadne’s character. The plot centers around Ariadne's relationship with her legendary suitors and the dramatic tension that arises as she grapples with themes of love, abandonment, and vengeance. In this play, Ariadne is portrayed not as a passive figure, but as a woman with deep internal conflict and desires. The setting of Mantua provides a rich backdrop, allowing Lee to explore the opulent and politically charged atmosphere of Renaissance Italy. The character of Ariadne is reinvented as a complex figure who navigates her own emotions, as well as the dynamics of power, politics, and art in a society shaped by aristocracy and intrigue. Lee’s writing combines historical fiction with elements of classical mythology, presenting a unique retelling of the myth that emphasizes the human aspects of her pain and loss.
