The general divisions are numbered consecutively from 1 at the beginning of the general text of each publication to the close thereof; and the subdivisions of the paragraphs are designated by letters of the alphabet. The figures denoting the respective numbers of the general divisions and the letters marking the subdivisions are placed in the left margin at the beginning of the divisions and sub divisions which the number or letter is intended to designate. References to paragraphs are designated by the number referred to being placed in parentheses immediately to the right of the clause or sentence desiring the reference. Thus: (r.
