Excerpt from Biographia Dramatica, or a Companion to the Playhouse, Vol. 1 of 3: Containing Historical and Critical Memoirs, and Original Anecdotes, of British and Irish Dramatic Writers, From the Commencement of Our Theatrical Exhibitions; Among Whom Are Some of the Most Celebrated Actors; Part II Iawm, eyles, was born at Calcutta, in the East Indies, in the year 1751. His father was from the kingdom of Ireland, of the family of the Irwins of Oran, in the county of Roscommon, who possessed a considerable property in that quarter. By' the mother's side he is descended from Sir John Smith, Bart. Ofhasly Hall, 'in the county of Essex, whose estate is still in the family. Mr. Irwin's father being led by inclination to go abroad, during his residence in the East India Company's service married and died; and, among other children, left the gentleman of whom we are about to give a short account.
