Biography of An Lu-shan, translated and annotated by Howard S. Levy, offers an in-depth exploration of one of the most pivotal figures in Chinese history. An Lu-shan, the Sogdian-Turk general whose rebellion in 755 AD destabilized the T'ang Dynasty, is the subject of this meticulously researched biography, drawn from primary sources such as the Chiu T'ang-shu (Old History of the T'ang Dynasty) and Hsin T'ang-shu (New History of the T'ang Dynasty). These sources, along with other historical accounts like the Tzu-chih t'ung-chien and various poems and prose from the T'ang era, form the backbone of this translation, providing rich insight into the life and times of An Lu-shan. Levy's work not only translates key passages but also provides detailed annotations that help modern readers understand the complex historical and social contexts surrounding An Lu-shan's rise to power and subsequent rebellion. By comparing different versions of An's biography across sources, Levy brings to light discrepancies in the historical record, revealing how the interpretation of An Lu-shan's actions has evolved over time. His careful analysis of the two major T'ang dynastic histories and their treatment of An Lu-shan's military campaigns offers readers a clearer picture of the rebellion and its lasting impact on Chinese history. For scholars and general readers alike, Biography of An Lu-shan is an invaluable resource that deepens our understanding of the T'ang Dynasty's collapse and the intricate interplay of political, cultural, and military forces in one of China's most tumultuous periods.
