"Dope" is a story that revolves around the illegal drug trade, specifically the trade in opium, which was a significant social issue during the early 20th century. The novel follows the efforts of two amateur detectives, Paul Harley and his friend Malcolm Knox, as they become embroiled in the investigation of an opium smuggling operation in London. The plot is filled with intrigue, action, and suspense as the protagonists uncover the workings of the criminal syndicate and seek to bring the criminals to justice. The novel also explores the social and moral implications of drug addiction and the impact of the opium trade on individuals and society."Dope" reflects the concerns of its time regarding the dangers of drug addiction and the criminal organizations involved in the illegal drug trade. It's worth noting that Sax Rohmer's portrayal of these themes may be seen as reflective of the attitudes and perceptions of the era, which may differ from contemporary perspectives on drug addiction and crime. While "Dope" is not as famous as Rohmer's Fu Manchu series, it remains an interesting work that provides insight into the cultural and societal concerns of the early 20th century and Rohmer's storytelling abilities in the detective and crime fiction genre.
