Excerpt from Fifty Years of Rapid Transit: 1864-1917 In the year 1870, when the first dummy engine trains ran on the first elevated railroad, the entire street rail way travel of the city was about passengers. In 1880 this had grown to - more than doub ling in ten years. Each succeeding decade has seen a corresponding increase until at the present time (1917) the passenger traffic in the greater city is upwards of a year.
