A new writer, Nellie Brooks, who lives in crowded and noisy New York City, in the 1880s, gets compliments about her writing from both pros and amateurs. The only trouble is she finds it very difficult to write in the cacophony of the city. A solution is possibly found when, one day, she walks in front of a shop advertising itself as a marriage broker. She peers in the window and sees a woman looking back and gesturing for her to enter. She takes a chance and goes in. They discuss how it works and Nellie is so intrigued that she sits right down and begins a discussion about the process. Heads together they look through a lot of listings and almost at the end the broker says 'ah hah' and then highlights a listing "perfect for you, miss."
A man called Burt Livingston is found and appears to meet all of Nellie's needs. His ranch house is quiet, located in a forest, has a babbling broke nearby and is anxious to meet his life partner. He would love to start a family with the right woman. Nellie is not too sure about the last requirement, but thinks she could work on it. After correspondence, a match is made and Nellie pake her bags and heads for the train station, hopes high and ready for a new, quiet life.
