Excerpt from Hindu Tales: An English Translation of Jacobi's Ausgewahlte Erzahlungen in Maharashtri As regards the style of the translation, I have to remark that elegance of diction was a very subordinate consideration. Faithfulness, above all, I considered the thing to be striven after. Very frequently the outland ishu ess is in the matter and not in the words, If you try to adapt yourself to our modes of expression you destroy too much of the thought conveyed by the original. Per haps even a little more wooden literalness would have done more good than harm, at least to the beginner in Prakrit. Still it is a pity that the many charms of style that beautify the stories in the Prakrit have been lost.
