Where Scotland kept its memories. In sung stories, whispered charms, and fireside beliefs. Songs keep the past breathing. William Gunnyon gathers history told in ballads and turns it into vivid, readable commentary: a folk song collection and Scottish ballad anthology that doubles as antiquarian history essays. Moving between Scottish Lowlands history and the wilder edge of Scottish Highlands folklore, he traces Scottish life and customs as they appear in love-songs, laments, war-cries, and market-day tales, attentive to dialect, place, and the everyday texture of work, worship, and celebration. Along the way come Highland legends and superstitions, local traditions, and the kind of named people and places that make a practical reference for genealogists as well as a rewarding sourcebook for Scottish studies. Gunnyon writes with an antiquary's curiosity, linking refrain to record and belief to circumstance. The result suits browsing and serious enquiry alike: a guide for anyone tracing a parish name, following a legend, or building a well-loved Scottish classics shelf. Set beside the great tradition of Robert Burns ballads and the romantic reach of Walter Scott legends, this volume stands as a window onto how Scots once explained the world and themselves - through melody, memory, and myth. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike. Dip in for a single legend, or read straight through for a layered portrait of a nation.
