From the timber mills of New Brunswick, the training fields of Britain, the beaches of Normandy, the POW camps of Western Europe, to a narrow escape from one of the most shocking acts of brutality to be committed in WWII France, follow the journey of Canadian veteran George Carvell of the Royal Winnipeg Rifles. At once both intimately personal biography and Canadian military history book, I'm a Survivor, Not a Victim provides a vivid look at the Normandy raid and the horrific Ardenne Abbey massacre by the 12th SS Panzer Division Hitlerjugend. Carvell's great-great niece Amanda Shepherd meticulously researches and recreates Carvell's experiences of training, battle, incarceration, and eventual release and return home. Within these pages, Shepherd presents her great-great uncle as he presented himself, not so much a victim of war, but a survivor.
