First published in 1986, Integrating the Handicapped into Ordinary Schools provides a picture of educational provision at the time for hearing-impaired children and presents original research about their integration. After reviewing related research and analysing the philosophy of integration, the author describes her own research based on observation and interviews with teachers, normally hearing pupils, and hearing-impaired pupils in three education authorities. Particular attention is paid to the deaf individual's consciousness of his deafness, special identity, and view of himself in relation to others. This book will be of interest to students and researchers of special education.
