The novel Jesse follows a confident 16 year old high school student who transfers to Central High in the small town of Jerome. Throughout the story, she encounters various people and student groups, including the notorious El Gang. This gang is lead by Stan and Cam, who control the school's drug trade; they also bully vulnerable students at school.
Jesse's compassion and moral strength make her a source of support for her new peers, but also a barrier of animosity with El Gang. Jesse challenges Stan's authority and cruel treatment of certain students.
Despite the hardships and moral dilemma she faces, Jesse remains true to her values, proving that courage and kindness can have a lasting impact in a sometimes difficult high school environment.
