Excerpt from Language of the Aborigines of the Colony of Victoria and Other Australian Districts: With Parallel Translations and Familiar Specimens in Dialogue, as a Guide to Aboriginal Protectors and Others Engaged in Ameliorating Their Condition To treat on the habits and customs of the Australian Aborigines in the limited space alloted to the Author, he feels that he shall scarcely be able to do either the subject, or that ill-used race of people, the justice to which they are in every way entitled, but which has been so long withheld from them. The object of the present introduction is to lay before the reader, in as brief a form as' possible, the leading features of a very interesting race of people, who are generally supposed to possess but little of the intellectuality with which their more favored white brethren are gifted. Than such a conclusion nothing could be more unreal in fact, or unjust to those to whom the imputation is implied, few people possessing closer reasoning powers, or having observing faculties of a higher order. This is not a passing remark of the moment, but the assertion of an individual who has devoted some fifteen years of his life to the subject.
