Excerpt from Law and Letters: Essays and Addresses Sir William Blackstone on entering strenuously upon the law bade farewell to the muses in verses of peculiar sadness and melancholy, and never afterwards uttered a note of song. Longfellow, on leaving college, commenced the study of law in his father's office, being already a poet soaring in the high reason of his fancies, with his garland and singing robes about him. Happi ly for his genius, and for American literature, he accepted a professorship within one year from the commencement of his legal studies. Richard H. Dana, son and grandson and father of very eminent lawyers, became disgusted with the law before admission, and gave the rest of his life to letters.
