The first-ever monograph of Mario von Bucovich, whose remarkable photographic estate was recently rediscovered after decades out of view.  A sensational discovery: the estate of Mario von Bucovich (1884–1947) has been found in a garage in Mexico. Now, for the first time, the work of this master photographer is presented in a richly illustrated scholarly monograph. Active across Berlin, New York, and other international hubs in the 1920s and 1930s, Bucovich captured everything from formal portraits and nudes to cityscapes and advertising motifs. In terms of visual language, his style extended from art photography through to the New Vision and color photography. Von Bucovich was a committed advocate of photography as an art form. He was among the most sought-after portrait photographers of his time, capturing luminaries such as Marlene Dietrich and Leon Trotsky. His images appeared in the illustrated press and at international exhibitions. He also published photobooks on great cities, including Paris (1928), praised by Walter Benjamin, and Berlin (1928), with an introduction by novelist Alfred Döblin. Largely forgotten after his death in a traffic accident in 1947, the photographer receives a fitting tribute in this monograph.
