Around 360 BC a certain Pasiteles was prosecuted for stealing sacred wax from the sanctuary of Epidauros. This curious episode raises many questions. What made the wax sacred? Was it an inherent quality? Or a label attached to the material because it was used in a sacred setting? This book investigates these and other questions, emphasizing the polyvalency of the Sacred in the world of ancient Greco-Roman religions. Contributions explore the concepts and vocabulary of the Sacred; its textual environments; its practitioners and sacred places and spaces. The enquiry ranges from the Greek archaic period to the Roman Empire, and includes analysis of literary, epigraphical and material sources.
