Enter the Pyramids before the tour buses. Dust, heat, and hard decisions. In 1837 Colonel Howard Vyse records, day by day, the risky labour, calculations, and logistics behind the first modern attempts to probe Giza's stone giants. Operations Carried On At The Pyramids Of Gizeh is both an archaeological expedition journal and a 19th century travelogue: a working notebook of Giza pyramid excavations, from trenches and clearances to measurements, inscriptions noted, and the human drama of men, tools, and time. The narrative then lifts into a Nile River voyage, following the author through upper Egypt travel with the alert eye of Victorian era Egypt, describing landscapes, temples, and encounters that shaped early fieldwork. An appendix rounds the volume with practical detail that rewards rereading. As an egyptology primary source, this is pyramid exploration history in its rawest form, showing how knowledge was gathered before modern methods, and why debates in ancient Egypt archaeology still return to these early records. For anyone tracing the roots of egyptology, Vyse offers an unvarnished record of ambition, error, and perseverance at the edge of knowledge. Scholars will value it as an egyptology reference book; curious readers will relish the immediacy of travel and discovery; collectors will appreciate owning the complete Volume I as part of a serious history research collection. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike.
