Although largely designed and built for aesthetics and recreation, the city's lake front was also developed for shore protection. Extensive Iandfilling and construction of revetments, bulkheads, jetties, groins, and breakwaters began in the mid to late-18003 and were mostly completed by the 19403. About 53 percent of the 27 miles of Chicago's shoreline consists of such shore-defense structures of various designs.
