Excerpt from Reindeer-Land (Arctic Sketches) Many years ago, and yet not so many as mod ern history would count - just a trifle more than thirty years to be exact - the writer was on his way to England for the first time. On the vessel was a judge from a western city, with his wife and two daughters. An acquaintance sprang up which led to the statement from the judge that he was bound for the Arctic land, to observe at close range the habits of the reindeer. Wrap ped in seclusion, was the way in which he refer red to the north of Norway and Sweden. We have been told, he afterward wrote in a book.
