Ricardo receives the medallion from his great grandfatherTukor. When drought hits the hidden canyon near Santa Fe, he and his father Carlos take the horse herd to the San Luis Valley of southern Colorado, near the present town of Del Norte. World War I brings an offer from the British for the horse herd, which Carlos can't refuse. Ricardo and his best friend Rock Dog, a Ute Indian, are sent to England with the horses.
