After her daughter leaves home for university, Cassie finds the courage to run away from her abusive husband. Now in a strange city, alone, she wonders if she made the right choice. Years ago she was a skilful painter, but being in a controlling marriage killed her creativity. Now, submerged in the surroundings of the garden city, she has the urge to paint once again. Seeking out supplies, she finds a beachfront bookstore, where she meets flamboyant owner Louise and her son Nick. Two very different people, Cassie is drawn to them both. Louise, with her motherly charm, takes everyone under her wing. Nick is quiet and intelligent, but Cassie recognises the pain behind his blue eyes.
