In her college years, she withdrew into herself and then chose to live a reclusive life in the San Juan Mountains. For two summers she backpacked through the wilderness and spent the winters in a secluded cabin, but when, with another winter coming on, she finds her cabin has burned down, she is forced to seek shelter with a stranger. Wary and frightened, she finds the man, William, to be kind and caring, and they gradually develop a bond.
