Cy Twombly was an American artist who spent most of his career in Italy. His signature paintings feature colourful marks scribbled and smeared on canvas. Fascinated by the cultures of ancient Greece and Rome, Twombly was inspired by history, mythology and poetry. The act of painting, he once said, could come out of “one ecstatic impulse.”
