Excerpt from The Diseases of the Lungs The book does not aspire to the position of a treatise on the diseases of the lungs, the object kept in view throughout having been to produce a work likely to prove useful to those engaged in the practice of medicine. The authors have read and discussed each other's work, but it has been thought advisable in order to obviate any doubt which might arise as to the identity of the writer who expresses an opinion or recommends any particular method of treatment, that each chapter should be initialled by the author who is responsible for it. An anatomical chapter has been introduced, which, while not intended to include all that can be said about the anatomy of the lungs and the surrounding parts, will, it is believed, be found to contain, in an accessible form, a number of useful facts such as the reader would only be able to discover with much labour in the textbooks of anatomy. In the revision of this chapter they have had the invaluable help of Professor G. D. Thane, of University College. It is hoped that due acknowledgment has been made in the text of the indebtedness of the authors to the works of previous writers, and particularly, as regards the medical aspect of the subject, to the masterly treatise of Dr. Wilson Fox on Diseases of the Lungs and Pleura.'
