Excerpt from The London Journal of Botany, 1845, Vol. 4 A figure of this remarkable plant having been published lately in the Botanische Zeitung, (p. 758, with a short account of it by Dr. Seubert, it may be interesting to Botan ists to be informed that it is the Batie P vermiculata of Sir William Hooker, who so called a plant gathered by Douglas at the junction of Lewis and Clarke's River and the Columbia. That plant was supposed to be a male; and I had entertained the same opinion until the appearance of Dr. Seubert's figure, which has taught me how to find good female flowers in Douglas's specimens. They are extremely minute, buried in silky hairs, and completely hidden by the base of the leaves. Their examination has enabled me to determine the internal structure of the ovary, which Dr. Seubert does not mention.
