When eleven-year-old Oliver Marsh - a boy who organizes his pencils by hardness and reads thermodynamics for fun - is sent to spend the summer working at his Uncle Mick's chaotic, grease-soaked garage, he expects to be miserable. He can't change a tire, he can't identify a socket wrench, and he nearly ruins a customer's minivan on his first real assignment. But Oliver has a gift the garage doesn't know it needs: he listens. Really listens. And in the waiting room of Mick's Garage, people talk - about their fears, their losses, their hopes - while the mechanics fix the machines that carry them through their lives. Oliver builds a system, earns a nickname, and slowly becomes the bridge between two languages: the language of engines, and the language of people.
