An individual and dryly witty poetry collection by one of the most brilliant poetic voices from Ireland.
Alan Gillis is one of the most admired Irish poets at work today. His latest collection addresses some of the most pressing concerns of the age: how do we live at the centre of our contemporary paradox, connected and disconnected as we are? How to we face a day that carries with it both the promise of the future, and an ever-present awareness of what MacNeice called "a manhole under the hollyhocks?" Gillis is a poet of thresholds, of suburbs and the edgelands, of the hesitation at the doorstep and the gate.
The Readiness sites itself at the heart of our human contradictions, and explores their meaning: the innocence of children that persists into the resignation of adulthood; a nature that is still both domesticated and wild; the terrible isolation of contemporary life, and the live-streamed, advert-laden over-connectedness that springs from its digital commons. It does this with a formal confidence, a dry wit and often astonishing lyricism that marks Gillis as one of the most individual and vital poetic voices now at work.
