Excerpt from The Romance of the Fiddle the Origin of the Modern Virtuoso, and the Adventures of His Ancestors On the other hand, it is certain that Gasparo da Salo, of Brescia, made violins during the latter part of the sixteenth century, and several fine specimens of his workmanship are still extant. Adreas Amati, who was born at Cremona about 1520, and died after 1611, is also mentioned as one of the first, if not the first, maker of violins, but his surviving instruments are rather small (about three-quarter size).
