Cranbrook, British Columbia, is your quintessential Rocky Mountain town, but in The Secret History of My Hometown , it is anything but typical. A young lovesick Ernest Hemingway hunts for missing elephants; Leon Trotsky decides that Cranbrook, not Mexico City, is the perfect place to hide away; and after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, a Chinese family’s grocery store’s survival rests in the hands of the legendary Monkey King. Andrew Boden provides an array of original voices that add humour and personality to this imagined history, resulting in a collection of stories that demonstrate the powerfully deep and often unremembered history of smalltown life.
