The play satirizes the social aspirations of the bourgeoisie and their attempts to emulate the aristocracy. The central character, Monsieur Jourdain, is a wealthy but uncultured shopkeeper who desperately wishes to become a member of the French nobility.Jourdain, eager to enhance his social standing, spends lavishly on tutors to teach him the manners, etiquette, and skills he believes will allow him to pass as a nobleman. He takes up fencing, music, and philosophy, all with the misguided belief that these activities will elevate his status. Meanwhile, his family is caught in the chaos of his misguided ambitions, and his servants, along with his daughter, conspire to expose the absurdity of his efforts.
