On the raw edge of a new world, a sermon confronted the oldest human temptation: self-love. It cuts straight to pride. Preached at Plymouth, in New-England, in 1621, Robert Cushman's address speaks with plain Puritan force, turning the sin of self-love into a searching spiritual pride warning and a steady christian humility teaching. Presented here as the complete sermon text of a classic puritan sermon pamphlet, it is also a compact classic sermon collection in miniature: scripture-centred, practical, and unsparing about the heart's evasions. Short sections build like a case in a court, moving from doctrine to application, with a tone both urgent and pastoral. Cushman draws the reader from self-regard towards duty, gratitude, and neighbour-love, making it compelling devotional reading for christians as well as a bracing aid for ministers, students, and anyone wrestling with ambition disguised as piety. Read a few pages at a time, it rewards reflection; read at speed, it lands as moral argument and spiritual discipline. Its value is historical as well as spiritual. Cushman writes amid hardship, showing how faith shaped conscience. As a document of seventeenth century new england and pilgrim fathers theology, it offers a window for colonial church history study and for readers tracing calvinist practical divinity as it was preached in the Plymouth colony 1621. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and classic-literature collectors alike.
