A nine-year-old girl is sent to a rural farm to serve her sentence for shoplifting—a punishment so unique to Iceland. In the picturesque, serene landscape, she finds a community torn apart by the struggle between ancient traditions and new trends. This is no idyll; the girl must face new and painful sensations and confront the unknown within herself and the strange surroundings. By gradually surrendering to the restrictions and inevitable hardships of remote rural life, she finds a measure of freedom.
