Maura has been carefully raised by the wizard Langbard as his apprentice. They live in a remote part of Umbria, a country ruled by the Hanish Empire. One day, Maura rescues a man being chased by Hanish soldiers. Only to find out he’s Rath Talward, known as Rath the Wolf and the head of a band of outlaws. His fearless and masculine presence makes Maura uneasy, but Langbard tells her she must go on a journey with the outlaw.
