The World Beyond is a utopian, speculative fiction of pandemic, quantum events, nonlocality, and resurrection. Tom, a lost saint raised in a friary orphanage, flees it after it is leveled in one of a series of events called the Rearrangements. Years later he works in Bartleby-like obscurity processing data in his cube in a faraway city, until the manager summons him to assuage the company and community following a series of floods that seem to signal yet another Rearrangement. After the crowd turns on him and rushes the stage, he flees once again, this time spirited away by the company in a security drone. He links up with a comical cabal made up of a failed ferry captain former theoretical physicist, a rogue Jesuit apartment building super, and a gun-toting auto mechanic storefront bishop, who have cooked up an Armageddon weapon in the latter’s repair shop and are attempting deliver it via a hijacked tugboat under his command.
