Excerpt from The Writings of Madame Swetchine Under the auspices of' this simple flower, I have placed the following thoughts. They, too, have ripened under the snows, and taken their hue, like this little red berry, from the fires of the interior sun. The most of them were committed to writing during the winter of 1811, which I passed in the country, in profound retirement. They are utterances which sprang from my own heart, but reached no other; impressions which clothed themselves in images to people my solitude.
