Technical proficiency liberates us from having to be concerned with technique. The value of endless hours of repetitious and often mundane exercises the professional goes through lies not in the acquired flash and finesse, but in the freedom to focus on musical considerations. The less we have to think about technique, the more we can concentrate on applying that technique to musical interpretation. From the author’s experience as a performer and teacher, he has determined that creating music is primarily a mental process rather than a physical one. Physical mastery of the instrument is a presupposition, so that any rhythmical, coordination, and sticking challenge will be met with relative ease, allowing each note to be played with an equal intensity of concentration.
